Would like info on Star Model 30M.

I'm considering acquiring another 9mm pistol. I like the specifications and looks of the Star Model 30M.

What is the opinion of folks on this board. Reliability? Ergonomics? Accuracy?

Thanks,

Jim

I have a 28M and it is a tack driver. The 28M and 30M are basically the same with the exception of the position of the extractor. I have had no fte or ftf issues. Ergonomics? well that depends on you. My 28 m fits my large hands very comfortably and the trigger is VERY crisp with no creep. You will enjoy it. I have to add this...my pistol was NOS...basically NIB and I picked it up earlier this year. accuracy will depend on the condition and maintenance afforded the one you are looking at! Extra mags are to be found as the 28 and 30 use the same one, although they are pricey. Z
Thanks,

I see a few on Gun Broker from time to time. I also see Model 30PK pistols occasionally.

I suspect I'll look for a 28 or 30M.

Jim...the PK has an alloy frame, I am not a fan of those. Go here..http://star-firearms.com/firearms to read all about Star 28/30/31 pistols. I am not aware of any of the boards sponsors currently selling any Star pistols..So..Sarco has been advertising them in SGN and have 30m's in the latest ad for a good price,BUT...you get what you pay for with them. it can be a crap shoot as to condition, so beware of that! Had a 30M in the 90's . It's a large heavy duty

pistol . It worked well . Eventually gave it to my

daughter .

I have several 28s (3), 2 30Ms, a 30pk and a 31P. For target practice and general shooting I like the 28 best - the trigger is better. I shoot a lot of lead bullets for the fun of it and the 28 I generally shoot likes them and is a tack driver - busts clay pigeons at 25 and 50 yds with regularity and can keep most shots in a 4 in circle at 25yds - just as good as my S&W mod 14. I got a mint in the box 28 a while back for 250$ but you have to wait for that kind of price. She is a safe queen (for now). I got one of Sarcos 30s and sold it - it was ok but kind of used up. You probably have heard that a firing range in CA had two of them and each went 75,000 rounds before they needed repair. Interarms shot one 105,000 time before the slide cracked (the barrel was replaced at 75,000 and some small parts had to be replaced. This info is from the Antaris book. So I guess if you get a good one it can go forever. I have shot one of my 28s 2000 times without a hitch
I have a 30M, 31PK, and a 31P in .40 caliber. These are some of the best guns Star made and I have no regrets buying them. All shoot very well but mine aren't reliable with Winchester white box ammo. I get failure to extract about once every one or two magazines. I seem to have the same problem with this ammo in other guns also so it must be the ammo and not the gun. All other ammo I have tried seems to work fine though.

There are after market magazines for these guns but I have yet to find an after market mag that fits without having to do some fitting. They all seem to fit way too tight and won't go in all the way or need to be pryed out if they do. Original mags can still be found at gun shows and are the only ones worth buying.

Stripping the gun past field stripping is a bit unusual also. It is easy once you know how and can be taken apart with the slide stop and firing pin as tools. It was made to be repaired in the field and comes apart by pushing in spring loaded pins to unlock components then sliding the components off. It has no small screws to take out and on the 30M no pins to drift out either. The 31P however does use a pin to hold the extractor unlike the 30M which is held in by spring tension. Assembly is a little different also because of the mag safety. If I remember correctly you must have the pistol pointing up when re-inserting the hammer and sear module.

Another thing I noticed on my 30M is that it tends to get dirty under the extractor and needs cleaning every so often. Its not hard to do but like I said taking this gun apart is a little unusual and you must take the safety out to remove the extractor as they share the same spring. The 31P however has seperate springs for the safety and extractor.

My 30M has been accurate and reliable. I don't think you will regret buying one however my preference would be for the 31P over a 30M but not by much.

Hello

for this gun,is it possible find beautiful wood grips?:)
The 30M is probably the finest, strongest and most reliable pistol Star Bonifacio Echeverria ever manufactured. Their operation is best described as "lazy": they are overbuilt, understressed, almost never break or need repair, and as a consequence are utterly dependable.

The 30PK was an unsuccessful attempt to shorten and lighten it. It cannot be compared with the 30M.
