Russian tanks still use unditching beams. They are normally carried under the longrange fuel tanks on the back of the vehicle. They are just a bit wider than the tracks and they fit into a cable loop that is attached to each track. The beam goes in the cables at the front ( or rear if they're trying to back out), driver goes in the direction indicated and when the beam gets to the back of the tank its pulled out of the cable loops. If they're still stuck they try to drive forward until the loops are back at the front end where they put the beam back in and try again. You tube has some decent videos of they being used
