Back in 2005 and 2006 Stan Z wrote a scholarly article on the wood used for Japanese rifle stocks. I have placed it here with permission from the editor of Banzai, old Ronin himself.

Short story is that about three or four species closely related to circassian walnut were used.

Read all the pages and check out the references too, there is lots of info here. There is also some info on the finish used- "urushi" or "shizhu".
