Why does Russian .30'06 have this? DocAV? Ammolab?

All Russian .30'06 has this band towards the case head, much like much larger cartridges do (25mm Bushmaster and so)

What is it and why is it there???

To help prevent case head seperations. The "ring" will flatten out, allowing the case head to move to the rear. You can find some cases with more than one ring (not necessarily Russian).

New cases should be within CIP or SAAMI specs. After firing they could be longer depending on how much they stretch which is determined by the headspace of the rifle. No different than any other ammo.
