Consider the rarity of a Chinese marked M91 compared to, say, an M28 or even an M24. I'm not gonna say it was worth two or three times what it brought.

The markings are Japanese, not Chinese. The brands translate "Hosei University", which is located in Tokyo.

I'm the one who bid on it. I got it for two reasons first is it's the only one I've come across, second my wife is collecting some arisakas and she thought it would be a nice piece to "connect" the two types of rifles.

I agree - this rifle is a nice compliment to your growing Arisaka collection. This M91 variant is poorly documented and under-appreciated. Like Ted says, it may be a bit high in price now, but not in a few years. Like a fellow Japanese collector often remarks: "I didn't pay too much for that rifle, I just bought it a little too soon."
