Looks to be 3006 ammo It's in 20 round boxes. outside of box says ojp 1957 20 7,62 mm s-patronen/gm1. It's brass case. Head stamp ojp 57 left side 3 dots looks like m2 ball. thank s for your help
No. DO NOT USE THIS FOR THE M1 RIFLE. This cartridge will produce excessive pressure at the gas port and can damage the operating rod. It is fine for bolt guns (M1917 and high number M1903).
There is far better ammunition on the market, pass on this stuff.
It was made for the M1 Garand (GM1 = Rifle M1 in German).... but age must have raised the pressure level a bit, and thus the less than favorable reports.
I did shoot a bunch of this that came boxed and packed on M1 Clips from the 1960s with no trouble, but I am not giving all such ammo a blanket recomendation.
I had much trouble with French 30-06 from this era....watch out for that too!
