Hello,
Long time member, haven’t posted much. I’ve owned this beautiful rifle for about 10 or 15 years. It’s been kind of a safe queen. I’ve never shot it. Pulled it out yesterday and realized that I don’t really know much about it. Serial # look-up puts it at 1955.
Is this just a standard 1640? Anything special or unusual about this rifle? Looks virtually unused, and the wood figure and grain is spectacular! Any information or observation would be appreciated.

Thank you! Am I correct on the Mfg. date with SN- 184XXX? I’m confused by the lack of rear sight. I don’t see evidence of one ever being mounted.
If I add a scope, I’d likely choose a period correct Euro model. Are the sling swivels factory or added later?

Your rifle appears to be identical to mine, except for the missing rear sight, which was dovetailed into the barrel. Sling swivels were factory installed, I believe. Mine is #2013xx and is most likely 1955 manufacture.

I removed both front and rear sights from mine and installed recoil pad, as the liteweight 30/06 kicks like a mule with the plastic buttplate. Very accurate and rugged little rifle, mine has served me well for hunting the mountains of Calif for deer and wild pigs. Took a nice trophy antelope with it as well.

Two questions:

1. Why would this rifle have no rear sight dovetail? (See photo).

2. Are the sling swivels likely original to the gun, or added after the fact?

Maybe it came with a scope and the previous owner wanted to keep it?

Maybe it had an aperature sight and...same story?

That is strange. Maybe it was a special order gun. Were trade winds imported guns marked as such? If it lacks those marks perhaps it's just a special order lightweight with cheek piece and forend checkering to boot? I'm just speculating, but it's an interesting gun. Any import marks anywhere at all?

What’s the difference between the 4000, and the 4100?

Are the tapped holes (filled with plugs) on the side of the receiver an indication that there was, at one time, a receiver-mounted aperture sight?

I don’t see any markings other than what I showed in the photos above.

From what I read, the mdl. 4000 had no rear sight, but had a "Monte Carlo" stock. It could be this rifle was a mismatch of the mdls. 4000 and 4100, having a straight comb stock and a barrel with no rear sight. Or possibly, as I said before it was merely a special order gun. Again, I'm just guessing and it's food for thought.

well..it's definitely an oddball arrangement, having a front site and not a rear site. not often seen.
