With all the original PU scopes and mounts sold over the years that were saved during the Soviet refurbs, why did they not save the base mounts? What became of them?

Do you know anywhere that I can get some of these Polish bases?

Well, a lot of the genuine bases recently available came out of Poland. Probably something in that.

As to most Russian refurb bases - probably melted down to make other things. Remember, during captured Kar98k refurbishment, the bayonets, and PROBABLY the sight hoods and rods were tossed into the smelter.
no they were not

lots of battle field pickups did not have bayonets or cleaning rods, unlike the M91/30 the K98 bayonets were not attached to the rifles, it was pretty common too to see K98 without cleaning rods in the old battlefields
