My wife just mailed a package and I gave her crap about sending the usual stuff listed above (although it was the list of requested items). Anyone know if there is any need for "gear" type stuff, i.e cool max socks, flashlights, etc? I figure I'd rather send stuff they would actually use that might increase comfort/convenience vs junk food and magazines, etc.

My kid always liked small cans of fruit, gummi worms, NECCO, Flare 5 gum, and of course good cigars. Always good cigars. Guys at the FOB's and outposts just many times don't get jack. When I asked him about DVDs he said to not bother, they had guys who got all the newest within a few days after they hit the theatres. But that was probably just his base. A special treat was when I sent him Charmin. And I think someone earlier said Thorlo socks - expensive but prized. When he was home on leave he ripped me off on all mine.

A friend's son was in Iraq in the Marines a couple of years ago. Items he requested and we sent were: Heavy duty socks, bug repellant, a good survival/combat knife, snacks (cheese-its, fritos, chips), cannned fruit,magazines, local newspapers. EDINOH.

My son just got back a couple weeks ago..he agreed with this list and added gumy bears with a copy of the home town paper.
