Have a Carcano that I bought years back and basically stuck it in the fate. In cleaning it up, on the underside of the receiver ring is stamped 10 16. Would this be a date?. Came with a busted extractor so will get one from Liberty Tree. Thank,Frank

they are assembly codes, you can find them with letters or numerals, combination of both or all of one like this one is.

That sounds very much like October, 1916. There are indeed a number of other marks relating to operations performed by various armorers, but in my modest assortment, the month is consistently stamped above the year designated by two numbers. SW

Yes the 10 is directly above the 16. Barrel while not the best is starting to clean up. However my Chilean 7mm short rifle has a long way to go. Frank
