I have these three different/similar rounds. I have hundreds of each but trying to figure out the difference. There are two different casings. Two appear to be the same casing but one is silver tipped and one is not. Hopefully my pictures actually help.

The first two pictures show the same round. This ones primer is completely sealed with the red stuff and it also goes up higher on the projectile or bullet. Then the last two show the ones that appear to be the same casing, the primer is sealed the same but one is silver tipped.

Three? I see two.
Shoot groups with bullets from the same package, but shouldn't be much difference in them.
Powder lot is different. Maybe slightly different pressure/velocity?

Bullet styles were occasionally changed slightly. Sometimes with no visible difference, when loaded.
Different machines produce slightly different bullets, even the same machine adjusted differently on different shifts.
If you get down to it, no two bullets are exactly alike.:)

To be sure, pull a bullet of each type and measure/weigh/grind in half.

The silver painted tip, denoting a light ball projectile (147 gr.?) was eliminated, don't remember the year.
Done to save time/paint.

Heavy ball ammo (180 gr.) always has yellow tips.
Silver tip means light ball with steel core.
Yellow tip means Heavy ball with lead core.
Silver/Yellow means heavy ball steel core.
No color at one time meant light ball lead core, but starting in the mid 1980's since all Russian production (and I believe all Warsaw Pact production) was steel core, they did away with the silver markings.

The cartridges are likely both steel core light ball, one made before the marking deletion, the other afterwards.
