I know what it is and what it does, but why is a "frog" called a "frog"? Is it a derivation of some foreign word or is it a slur on the French? Something else?

According to my Oxford unabridged dictionary, use of the term "frog" to describe "a sheath suspended from a belt and supporting a scabbard" dates to 1710-20. The origin is not definitive, but perhaps is derived from the Portuguese word "froco" or Latin word "floccus."
