A plain half stock percussion rifle from circa 1840-1870. I would guess somewhere in the midwest.
any markings on the lock? Bore size? I'm guessing .40 or under.
Asked my buddy, he is in the Midwest and said the bore size isn't much bigger than a .22

Also said there are markings near the lock of a hunting dog and birds, but he can't see much else due to the burn marks from the percussion caps.

Pictures are too dark and far away to tell much about it. Hold the barrel in sunlight and look at it at different angles and you might be able to see the maker's name. Taking pictures in shaded area outside with clear focus on camera usually gives good pictures.
