Many modern rifle cartridge heads are ~.470", and I would assume 11.5mm across the base, like 30-06, 243, etc.

Who is the granddaddy?
TIA

The Swiss came up with the old 7.5x55 Swiss loading, the pre-GP-11 type. Then the Belgians modded that into the 7.65x54 and the Germans narrowed it into 7.92x57 I, which the Spanish modded into 7x57. I think. As best I remember.

Most think of the 7,65x53(or 54) as an Argentine developement from 1891.
It was actually developed for a Belgian M1889, that had an extraordinarily long service life IIRC.
The Argentines just got more press, while the belgians faded into history.
