The rifle has a lot to do with it as most of the ammo is loaded for the longer barrels and any carbine is going leave a lot of unburned powder that's going to "flash" when it exits the muzzle. Even the Finnish rifles will to a certain degree. An M91/30, and even better an M91, will produce the least flash with any ammo. As for which ammo has the least flash, I've never paid any attention to that. After all, I'm "all about the flash"!

I have a Tigr, and a 1pn58. Big flash not good for scope :) That scope is big and only first gen, but it looks "right" on the rifle.
Now for my 91/59 the more the better!
I have been told no 203grn or heavy ball for the Tigr.

Czech or DDR 123 gr. Short range has very very little.

I know my eyes aren't what they used to be and I only shoot during the daylight hours, but I've never noticed any muzzle flash shooting any of my Mosins. And I have shot just about every surplus round available. Maybe I should try firing from the hip and watching the muzzle instead of the target.

Try it on a dark night, you'll see the flash :)
With a 91/38 or other carbine it can be quite a flash. The type/maker of the ammo does make a difference. Who has some photos?

And remember it's the scope that I am trying to take care of, everything is just photons to electrons and back to photons to it :)
Too many photons = broken sight.

I can say the flashist ammo I've ever shot was Yugo repacked 1945 dated Soviet M908. That stuff put out a fireball as long as an M44, even in full daylight. Even more so than 7.62x54r.net.
As far as least flashy, I can't say. Ted needs to add a flash-o-meter to his testing setup.

My biggest surprise was that the Czechoslovakian 45 gr Short Range has a big flash. These were taken looking for "big flash" but it shows what you can get with even a light load. Part of the variation depended on how I "caught" the muzzle flash anticipating the self timer of the camera but it still shows how the light load flashes. Photos are L-R CZ 45 gr Light load, Wolf 148gr,
Brown Bear 185gr.
