The high point of this show (in Phoenix, next to seeing all my pards), to me, was getting to see this very rare item. Yoda, bless his heart, brought this for us to see and photograph and it made my day (even though he wouldn't sell it to me :(). It's an original crate for T-99 LMG ammo. This ammo could also be used in the T-99 rifle. It held 1380 rounds, which translates into 92 15 round boxes of ammo
Now we know :D
Note - in the interior that knots & other flaws in the wood are sealed with a black pitch like paint.
The cross out of the information on the ends appears to have been done with the same writing instrument that was used to address the box to it's hometown destination.

So what was sent home in it?
The tag in the lower left corner has a list of the items sent home in it. They were personal items like clothing, etc. I should have taken a close up shot of it.

Very cool! I may have to make one of these. Any chance you can get the interior dimensions in inches or centimeters?

John in Charlotte, NC
I didn't have a tape measure with me so, hopefully, Yoda will post this information.

Say Sonada :

Your sad soulful eyes did the trick !, the board material is 5/8 thick. Inside dimensions are 6 9/16 wide, 8 3/4 deep, and 26 1/2 long.
Big Ed, the label says :
_____ of Contents
Personel gear including, shirts, fishing tackle f____
Souveniers including :
1 vase value about $ 0.50
2 table cloth sets value about 5.00
1 slide rule value about 5.00
1 set of ash trays value about 2.00
Total value 12.50
List of contents enclosed
What was interesting is that this box was found at a Los Angeles swap meet in the mid 1990s and inside was 20 to 30 cardboard ammo boxes of 7.7 ammo labeled LMG 15 rounds in stripper clips. Many of the boxes were broken but some were still sealed. The box passed 2 pairs of hands before I got it, empty with 2 full unopened boxes for my daughter's collection.

Isn't it strange, todays mundane is tomorrows extraordinary! We open a box of ammunition, shoot it up and think nothing of throwing it into the trash. 60 yrs from now someone will pay very good money to have one, in almost any condition, to put in a place of honor and admire it!

Who plans for this? What if one of our grandfathers had been so enlighted as to carefully put away a box or two of ammo each year for his heirs? Or saved that old wooden box that he used for a stool in Camp Bungabo back in 44.

Whoever packed away that old ammo crate probably never considered the fact that they were preserving history!:D

No more of a different attitude than the rest of us here had during, say, the 1989-1992 period when all the Soviet bloc stuff started arriving in huge quantities after the end of the Cold War. We thought it would never end. Now the neat militaria from Eastern Europe and the former USSR has dried up and commands premium prices. Isn't that always the way?

Best,
Gunnar

I suppose this request is aimed at me. I will lay out the Kanji inscriptions under condition that you promise you build these just for your hobby's sake and not to sell them for commercial gains.

Edokko, too bad you weren't there to see this treasure in person. Aside from seeing all the old perverts this was a high point of the weekend for me!

Rob, yep I'm kickin' my butt for getting myself involved in this business trip to Japan. The Phoenix get-together and all the cool goodies seen there (T-99 ammo crate, "ground" imperial gift Baby, to name a few), looks soooo much better.
I also heard from El Olde Nezumi Otoko, that Garfield was bragging around that he can drink me under the table any time. Yea, right ! he can say that while I'm not around, but wait till next year, he better come prepared !
