I have a non-import marked P-38 which I am trying to determine if it was an East German rework. The frame is a war time Spreewerk as are the primary internal parts, locking block and grips. Slide is a slick side, with no markings at all and the barrel is not waffenampted. What markings did the East Germans use? This may also just be a pistol made from parts. It came with a WW2 marked magazine, non-matching, and a WW2 soft holster.

After closer examination, this one looks like just a nice parts gun. The barrel turns out to be a post war P-38 or P1. Still not sure about the origin of the slide as it is completely unmarked.

look at my avatar for the vopo sunburst. Also, the east germans would have most certainly serial numbered the slide to match. Another way to tell is if it has an east german p-38 firing pins. The east germans would sometimes replace the original firing pin with one they had made. The only difference is that they added an extra notch.
