I got this Type 99 Last Ditch during the summer and have yet to start restoring it. However, while I was messing with it, I found some odd writing which is pictured below. It's hard to read in the picture, but the word is "HOEME" and it seems to be stamped into the wood. It's an interesting old rifle to be sure, but if anyone has any insight into this odd word, it'd be much appreciated.

It says "HOE ME" obviously its demanding to be cultivated. Seriously it is most likely a past owners name possibly even the returning serviceman's. It is fairly common to find some sort of ownership marks such as names, initials, service numbers. They range from stamped to scratched and in varying degrees of neatness

So in yall's professional opinion, is this rifle worth restoring to her former glory? She's all matching and works fine, I just never had a chance to get some hardcore Rustoleum and bathe her in it. I mean seriously, for a hundred at a gun show, I really couldn't go wrong. Ground mum, serious rust on the outside, nicks and dings on the stock that appear to have been there before the finish on the wood was applied, sand in the mag from the beach where it was dropped, but nothing a serious scrubbing wouldn't fix really. I haven't really checked the bore much, but it seems to have some sand in it too since the last time I ran a bore brush through a nice cloud of grit came out. Standard last ditch in every other way, fixed sights, no provision for a cleaning rod, loose front handguard that was kept from rattling around by a broken map pencil, standard stuff basically. I was told by one idiot pawnshop owner that the firing pin was clipped, but I checked it out and if it was any longer it'd rupture the case. I suppose the only issue is that it is vehemently demanding to be cultivated. I'll have to teach it to be more obedient when I get back home I suppose.

I know it's a Nagoya, and that's about all I know. I disassembled it a couple times when bored, and it looks like it has no import marks. From what I can tell it needs a good bath in rustoleum, but no real pitting that I can find. I need to get a bore light when I get home and check the bore. The gangbanger thing explains alot! Especially explains why I was tempted to shoot it one handed and sideways! :O

Take a photo of the circled character at the front of the serial number area, or check out the Type 99 sheet that is in the stickies section. The sheet will give you an idea of what the series is.

I'll get a quick pic of it when I get home this weekend, right now I'm in Nebraska for college, but break starts tomorrow so I'll check it out when I get past the 9 hour drive home.
