First thing I thought when I saw the photo was that it was a VN-era photo.

The lack of shellac is usually just from wear and tear. It's a soft finish that loses its gloss very easily.

I don't think there's any doubt that there were 91/30s of various flavors in the VN conflict. Sure were enough M44s.
