I happened upon this baby the other day. When I saw the pictures with screwed escucheons in the front only, I knew I had to have it.
When I received the rifle, what I had suspected was true. This stock has a toe splice! When I removed the barreled receiver, you could also see that the stock had once been inletted for tang steps, but Ivan took his chisel out to remove them so the stock would accept a later receiver without steps.
At least he did a fairly good job of it.
Anyway, this appears to be a stock originally from early 1941 at the latest, given the tang steps, Izhevsk lineage and screwed escucheons. Toe splices are quite uncommon on M38 stocks, but this is the earliest one I have seen one.
BTW, I had spotted a 91/30 with screwed front escucheons only at a gun show. Like mine, Ivan had removed the tang steps to fit a later barreled action.
