Received a Type 99 from a veteran who was part of the occupation force. He told me when he brought it home the action worked but currently the bolt or safety do not operate. There is some movement in both but they do not function beyond that, The safety will push in but not rotate.
looking for some advice on what to look for or someone in the Chattanooga area that would know what to do.
Any help would be appreciated.

Stan...Great advice. Came a part in a little over a minute. Well worth the effort. Bore bright and realtively clean and all numbers match! Any advice on cleaning it up and preserving it? Are there any of the modern chemicals or lubes that will adversely affect it?

If there is no rust or corrosion. Use anything that would clean a modern rifle. If you have issues post picture of those areas for further assitance. If it is an early rifle with a chrome bore. Stay away from bore cleaners with a high ammonia content the chrome bore doesn't handle it well so I'm told.

Welcome to the board YB. Here is a website that will help you find out what arsenal and series you have.
http://www.gunboards.com/sites/banzai/DataSheets/M99/M99Data.htm#Model_99

If you have an early series, the bore will be chrome lined, later they weren't. Clean the bore as you would any rifle. I wipe down everything with rubbing alcohol to get the old grime and grease off.

If the stock has not been "messed with" (sanded, scraped or refinished with something), the original finish is Urishi. A type of lacquer made from the sumac plant. (There is an interesting story about Urishi on the Banzai website.) If it's the original finish, clean it, but leave it alone.

I wipe down all the metal parts with a product called Eezox. It protects the metal from rust.

Let us know what you have.

Dean,
Appreciate the web site. Just getting back to taking a closer look at the rifle. Serial # 3546, "AA" Rear sight with wings, Knurled Safety and so far all of the #'s I have found (Bayonet lug and bolt) match. Barrell certanly appears crome lined.
