I know I have seen this posted before but in my 20 years of collecting Japanese type 38 AND TYPE 99 RIFLES (and I have over 30 examples)
I have never had this problem. I purchased a type 99 from a guy on the net. the Rifle was as described execpt the bolt is locked in the action. I hate to take it apart as all screws are staked. I'm sure it was a combination of turning the safety and doing something else at the same time. Any help would be great or a link to the old post on this subject. Thank You, Ed

Take off the ejector/bolt release assembly. With a small screwdriver, push the firing pin foot (it engages the trigger, and has slipped over into the "fired" position) to the rear, while with your third hand lift the bolt handel counter-clockwise. This should put the firing pin back into the "cocked" position, and you can open the bolt.

In the meantime, don't try and "de-cock" an Arisaka like you would a Mauser (you already knew that). And yes I know one of the resident experts can do it, but I can't. :>) (I don't know how to fix elevators either)

here's another possible problem I found on my rifle this afternoon. I put a dummy round in mine just to discover I used the wrong caliber dummy round and locked my action up! Slide a wooden Dowel down the muzzle and see if there is a round in the chamber.

Hey - I like that;)
If it can be decocked (some can't), you don't decock it like a Mauser you decock it like an Arisaka :p

A Type 99 (40 series) was brought to our town museum a few weeks ago suffering from the same problem. It took at least 10 minutes of pushing in on the safety and wiggling the bolt, but I fixed it by using this method, as described by Jim (above). Geologyjohn

Problem solved with the first method from Dean . Thanks so much. It is a wonderful thing when you can tap in to all this information in one place. Thanks again from someone who thought I had seen it all. Ed
