went to an antique shop today and found a trench periscope with tripod in the rubberized canvas case and carry strap. the case was well marked on both outside and inside. carry strap was intact and is in good condition. both case and strap were dirty. the "bug eye" type periscope had a right cloudy optic with grid in it. and the left optic was black. i think something had come loose on the inside. the brass painted tripod was present and is in very good condition with lots of black paint left. the optics were marked Nikko. there was probably a part missing from the optics as they rotated a full 180 degrees on each end. the seller has it priced at $300 is this a good deal? can they be fixed?

the pic below is of the same model type but not the same set. the one in the shop is a little more worn and is missing that locking knob.

ok, ive tried to do some searching on google and such, but can find no info on these bino periscopes. if i remember correctly, the case says its a type 93, but that doesnt make sense because the type 93 was issued in a metal case, not a rubberized canvas type. any ideas?

Tada! your wish is my command.
Jarrod, what you are looking at this shop of yours is either a Type 92 or Type 2 binocular periscope, made by Nihon Kogaku (present Nikon). Quickest way to tell the difference is whether the eyepiece shade is a type that you pull out with your fingers or is just a permanent screwed in shade. The former is the Type 92 and the latter is the Type 2. Other that and some other very minor charactersitics the two are almost exactly the same build.

Would need to see photos to know what parts are missing and depending on that missing piece it may be very tough to find a replacement. Also these pieces are fairly easy to disassemble and clean, but you never know if some novice has already gone in and lost some of the important inner optical pieces or perhaps damaged the prism. I would think in such condition as you describe, $300 is too much to hash out. They do come out on E-bay once in a while, so would wait for a good one to come out when no one in watching. I got my Type 92, mint all across, with both canvas strap for the case and leather strap for the optics, and a lens brush, for a far-out price of $150. On E-bay when no one was watching apparently.
