I couldn't say more until the auction ended. (And I did not buy this one.) It is a Berdan II rifle, a single shot rifle used by the Russians along with the later Mosin Nagant in the Russo Japanese war. http://gunbroker.com/Auction/ViewItem.asp?Item=116686385
looks like it was captured and sent back to Japan for academy duity. Didn't someone post pictures of a 1891 that had the same treatment? I know someone on here has a 91 that has been reworked to a facimile of a Type 38 with school marks on it.
