Can anyone help with a translation of this mark from a gun stock. I'm not sure if it is Japanese.

It is a school mark. Okawachi School (大川内校).
Probably some defunct youth school. Is the rifle a Type 38 ?

I couldn't say more until the auction ended. (And I did not buy this one.) It is a Berdan II rifle, a single shot rifle used by the Russians along with the later Mosin Nagant in the Russo Japanese war.

looks like it was captured and sent back to Japan for academy duity. Didn't someone post pictures of a 1891 that had the same treatment? I know someone on here has a 91 that has been reworked to a facimile of a Type 38 with school marks on it.
