I have a DPMS LR-308 w/16" barrel, Magpul Handguard and CRT stock, Hogue grip, angled foregrip, and a Nikon Coyote Special 4.5-14x40 scope. Also has single point attachment.

Someone is wanting to trade for my AR-10 and has thrown out these rifles: Mosin-Nagant M44, Yugo M59/66 SKS, Romanian PSL, and a Saiga 7.62x39 w/16" barrel and approx. 2000 rnds of 7.62x54R ammo.

I'm starting to get into gun collecting, thanks Dad! I do love my 308 but I find it hard to pass up on a group like this. All the rifles are in great shape and he has invited me to come out and shoot them before we make any trade.

Now all I will do with these rifles is hunt deer and hogs. 400 yds is pretty much the longest shot I'd ever likely be taking. The PSL has caught my eye and sadly, I do like being somewhat different when I do things and hunting with a PSL IS different. ;)

Thoughts?

I have hunted with a PSL (hogs, coyote, and deer) for the past 8-9 years. It was a fine weapon for that. I used an 8x42d for daytime, and had a 3x75 IR and a 1pn34 for night use, so I was getting the maximum usage. I have since traded off/sold my PSL's, and all of my AK-types (except for an SBR that has to stay with me) and have started using AR's again. This is due to difficulties arising from a broken/crushed neck. I had forgotten how much more ergonomic to shoot and carry and AR truly is (I am former military and LEO). I would look at what you have in the AR set-up, versus the value of what you're being offered. Personal preference and "what you want" is ALWAYS THE factor. I have regretted many gun trades/sales, years after the fact. I regret letting my pet PSL go, but, I do not regret the fact that I am now more able to hump my rifle relatively pain-free.

Sorry, Duder, this one's gonna roll right back to you making the decision based on your desires. I would stay with the AR, unless I was wanting to become a Soviet collector. On that x54R ammo, make sure it's Light Ball if it's to be used in that PSL. Heavy Ball kills PSL's.

I know I "should" stay with the AR but my desire is to go for the PSL. The cool factor is a major contributor here.

Another factor is my baby girl's weight. She's a nice 13lbs when fully loaded and I took notice on my first hog hunt with her. Chasing pigs through rough terrain and carrying her became very noticeable.

Shooting the PSL may soon be the deciding factor.

Thanks for the input! :)

Shooting the PSL may soon be the deciding factor.
First, shoot ten rounds through your AR at 100 yards, rapid fire (not spray and pray, take time to aim and get a solid shot, every time). Then, do the same with the PSL and compare the targets. That should be enough to make your decision very easy.

I have no doubt the AR-10 will outshoot the PSL in such a situation. Unless I find myself being swarmed by hogs, I see no reason I'd pop off 10 quick rounds. One should do. ;)

I meant I want to see how the PSL kicks. My AR-10 was a gift for X-Mas and was actually hoping for the 243 variant. My son is growing up fast and think the 308 is a tad much for him.

The recoil of the PSL isn't going to be any better than that of the AR, possibly worse. I would recommend getting a nice bolt action .243. Something like a Savage 10 Predator Hunter (Ihave one. Amazing gun), or Remington 700. Lighter than both semis mentioned, FAR more accurate and recoils less.

THere is a reason that wad of rifles is being offered for your AR10 DMPS clone: you got the better weapon. He is not doing you any favors but if more means better, I am sure you can pulse the Collector board and trade "UP" for ten refurb Mosin 91/30. The PSL is not a SVD (Dragunov) so don't let the KF SVD similar looks blind you. If you don't know what KF stands for, PM to me, I will break the code for you.

You have a much better weapon . This guy is offering you a bunch of run of the mill cheap surplus eastern bloc firearms . I would not even consider such a trade .

The world is against me! :D

My dad, who bought me the 308 is also against me trading. I get why and completely understand everyone backing the AR. It is the better weapon in sooo many ways. The PSL is just so damn cool!

Bahhh...maybe I'll just go buy me a PSL! ;)

A PSL costs about $700-$800 plus $100 for a Romanian PSO scope. You can get one easily and some dealers will give you layaway.
Also, don't forget that, as said above, you can change uppers on your rifle to shoot most anything big or small.
Never, ever, ever sell a gun your dad gave you or 40 years later you will still be very sad.

I love the looks of my PSL, too ... but if I sold it and was going to buy a hunting gun ... I would not buy one for hunting. If all you need is one shot at less than 400 yards ... there are a lot of better guns and better cartridges than 54r for that range. You have a fair chance at a too clean thru and thru at 400 & less with 54r and 54r is awkward to use at 100 and less.

The only good reason to buy a PSL is because you want one.

Well I found a way around this spectacle!

I'm selling my old Remington 700 30-06 and Mossberg for about $800. Should be able to purchase a new PSL and keep my precious Annabel!

Where is the best place to buy a new PSL with scope?

There you have it ... you found a solution that makes sense . To find a PSL in today times is not too easy , because they are getting scarce and are being replaced by an avalanch of VEPR rifles , but they are out there . A normal price would be around $800 without any upgrades (mine has a lot of upgrades)... Be ready to start tinkering with it , because PSLs are "temperamental " to put it mildly and most require a lot of massaging(mostly with the magazines) and tuning from the trigger to the carrier , etc ... not AR-10 exacting manufacturing tech , I can assure you . But , they shoot well and are a lot of fun after they are taken care of . Ammo is very cheap if you shoot surplus , but it is corrosive and the rifle has to be cleaned up right after shooting (windex will do the trick , there are many threads to learn how to do it) , otherwise you will have a pile of rust in your hands in a few days. Here is a pic of my PSL that I took a couple of days ago :

There are plenty of them on GB and the other sale sites. Also, probably more than one or two thru the forum for sale sections here and others. That's where I got mine and paid less than other places.

If you aren't willing to look around, you better be willing to PAY ... but there is NO SHORTAGE

A bunch of these are Romanian receiver import rifles ... not more expensive, rare or hard to find as many keep repeating

Can't beleive you want to trade off a rifle your dad gave you for Christmas !!! Why don't you just hit him up side the head instead. I may be old fashioned, but gifts from parents don't go away very quickly! I still have a few .22's and shotguns, from my mom & dad that will go to son and grandsons!! And, besides, I will chime in, the AR10 is the far better rifle than all you have mentioned. Skid

I wasn't even gonna mention that...I still have the 1st .22 bolt rifle and .30-.30 Mod94 Winnie that my Pa gave me...NOT GOING ANYWHERE! hehe ;)

Don't freak out over the corrosive ammot thing. While it's still warm/hot from shooting, pour water down the ejection port and out the barrel. Windex helps with carbon breakdown, but the water is the mai thing to counteract/neutralize the salts. Then clean as normal. I will admit, that I did that after dumping maybe 100 rounds thru my fave PSL, then forgot to clean it later. 2 weeks later...NO rust, and the rifle never showed any appreciable wear after more than 8 spam cans were shot thru it. Again, don't get all freaked out over corrosive ammo, like so many people do. Cripes, ALL of the Soviet and Chinese weapons were made to run this stuff...wait! 90% of the World's weapons were designed for it...and I'm sure that Hadji, Vladimir, Yu, and Raul are cleaning their weapons at every break in the march...riiiiight! Joe doesn't clean his every break, either...(maybe that'll save me from being called a Nationalist/Rascist?)
