I decided to start another thread devoted exclusively to converting the Tokarev to 9x23 caliber.

I really like the size, weight and flatness of the Tokarev, but also very much like the .357 SIG cartridge in my P226. Having said that, a heavier bullet at same velocity as the 7.62 generates would be very useful for me, and the same ballistics of the .357 SIG from a smaller, flatter pistol {I've always wished they made a 220 in .357...} would be great.

The Tok + 9x23 seems to fit the bill, BUT...

Since auto pistols must sustain both pressure AND reciprocating recoil forces, I have for a long time questioned whether the 9x23 is a good idea in the Tokarev. I'm sure some of you have experience with the 9x23 in the Tok...

1} Have you experienced any metal fatigue/frame cracking, etc?

2} What velocities are you getting with what bullets?

3} How many rounds have you fired of heavy 9x23 in your Tokarevs?

4} What is the source of your barrels/links?

At any rate, this one seems like one of the few pistol conversions worth investigating...

ANY experiences you may have with the Tok and 9x23 would be appreciated! :)

The Norinco 54-1 that an uncle of mine gave me came with the 9mm Lugar barrel and bushing when he bought it. The salesman then asked him if he wanted the .38 Super barrel and he declined. I really wish he had bought it and then years later decided to give it to his favorite nephew!! At least he saved me the box and all.

Thread Aside -IWANNASEE - I bought a couple of those compensators (one for each Tok), but it seems to bind on my 7.62 barrel as it comes back. Did you have the same experience? I think mine are basically 7.62 diameter, but need additional reaming for 9mm.

I'm getting 1550 fps with the 125gn, and 1400 fps with the 147gn through a friends chrono..
I haven't had any problems whatsoever with the Tok mags and the 9x23 Winchester.

I needed to use the Norinco 9mm bushing with the 9mm barrel, the original bushing on the Romanian won't fit the 9mm Norinco barrel.

The above I posted on another thread. I've had no problems with the 9x23 Winchester. The pistol handles it easily. This round is probably the strongest case for a centerfire pistol cartridge, at least according to Winchester. I have an old Hornady Projector that I use to reload this.

I also bought two of those compensators.

Do you know how many rounds you have put thru the pistol?

Where did you get the compensators?

Thanks.

Wow ... in my 12/24/2008 post, I responded that I had shot 9x23 in my Tok - but I really only have shot 38 super - as that is the barrel I have, not 9x23. Don't know why I made that mistake, as I am normally very careful.

I only came on this thread again as I am looking at 9x23 in the context of a 1911, and then realized my mistake.

Sorry for any trouble this might have caused.
