Has anyone found a definitive historically documented answer as to why the mum was defaced? Over the years i have read that surrendered guns were defaced and captured ones were not, since they were retained as trophies by GI's. Also read that the Japanese soldiers defaced their weapons out of respect to the emperor which may account for the different appearance of the marks used to deface the mum. It seems that since MacArthur was anxious to retain the monarchy for post war stability, it seems unlikely he would have authorized this symbolic affront to the Emperor.

Now that there is the most extreme mum removal I've ever seen (not that I'm an expert, of course). I'm not even sure I'd try to fire the rifle.
