Mein liebes Rosalchen!
Heute deinen lieben Brief N° 230 und 3. Päktchen, eins von Else mit Kuchen von 20/8 und N° 227, 228, erhalten habe mich sehr darüber gefreut und sage Euch Allen vielen Dank dafür, auch unseren kl(einen) Walter für die gesanden Grüsse u(nd) Küsse. Zigarretten habe ich vorläufig genügend, schicke also nicht eher wieder welche bis ich danach schreibe. Mit der Batterie muss ich erst probieren wie lange ich reiche, in 4. Wochen kannst du wieder eine schi(c)ken.
Hier sind die Nächte schon ziemlich kalt auch wird es ½ 8 Uhr dunkel, also doch früher als wie bei uns zuhause, mit der Unterja(c)ke kannst du aber noch etwas warten, wenn es jetzt kalt wird ziehe ich die Drillja(c)ke unter.
Ja mit dem Urlaub habe ich bis jetzt nichts erhalten, mögte auch vorläufig nicht fragen, denn da heisst es doch blos Uhrlaub wollt Ihr, aber … , es bleibt mir eben nichts weiter übrig als zu warten, dass geht mir nicht alleine so, dass macht der Feldwebel einmal so.
In der Hoffnung, dass es dir liebes Rosalchen unseren kl(einen) Walter den Eltern Else u(nd) Walter gut geht grüsst und küsst dich 1000 mal dein treuer Karl.

My dearest little Rosa!
Today I got your dear letter number 230 and three parcels, one from Else containing cookies from the 20th of August and number 227, 228, I enjoyed them very much and say many thanks to you all for them, also to our little Walter for the enclosed greetings and kisses. So far I have enough cigarettes, so do not send anymore until I write for them. As for the battery I must first see how long it works, you can send another in four weeks. Here the nights are rather cold already also it gets dark at 7.30, so it is earlier than it is at home where we live, though you can wait a bit still sending the (under)shirt, if it gets cold now I'll use the drill tunic under. Well, as for the leave I have heard nothing so far, as for now I'd rather not ask, as then they'll say "leave you want, but....", so I have no option but waiting, well I'm not alone in that, the feldwebel is in the same predicament. In the hope that you, dear little Rosa, our little Walter, the parents, Else and Walter are fine your true Karl kisses and greets you 1000 times.

One thought... We read about all the food he gets sent to him, and we know that others got food from home too, but except for Walter who was his brother in law we never hear him talk about sharing any with anyone... I'm not saying it did not happen, but it strikes me as strange...
