In 1543, Portuguse traders landed on the island of Tanagashima at Japan's southern tip, as the story goes their ship was blown off course by a storm, They had matchlock muskets and when they departed one or more remained in Japanese hands, the beginning of the arms industry in Japan. It soon became apparent to the rulers (daimyo) of the many waring "kingdoms" in Japan during the period that it was easier to teach a peasant farmer to load, aim, and fire a matchlock than to become proficient with a sword an/or bow. One author notes that by 1600 there were more matchlocks in Japan than in all of Europe. (The question is, how did he know?)

Fast forward 450+ years, Japan launches another moon mission from her space exploration complex situated on the island of Tanagashima, from the matchlock to the moon rocket. What comes around goes around, or vice versa.

Without the Portugese and Adm. Perry, Japan might still be happily feudal; Pearl Harbor would not have happened, and what would the world be like today????
