Jon nailed it - You have a very nice 8th series. The 8th series mark is "chi" just like the Chigusa inspection mark.

Eighths and tenths are easy to mix up as they are often poorly stamp to begin with. Thats why you have to know what "features" belong on what rifle.Anyway very nice rifle.

I had sort of the same thing happen to me once. I found a nice condition Last Ditch Nagoya, with canvas late war sling sewed on, and did not have anything with me to identify the series. (I dont remember the series very well) Anyway, it had the same sight and sling as yours but looked fairly crude so I thought maybe it was a 10th, or even an 8th so I picked it up. Turned out to be a very late 7th. Was real happy with that! :)

Actually it is a very nice 8th, they were a little rough, but yours is close to as made.

Notice the odd milling or grinding marks around the front of the receiver; these show up on many rifles made in this time frame; like the spokeshave and chatter marked stocks.
