Hoo boy, it's been a pain-in-the-rear-end kind of schedule lately, what with the crappy economy badly impacting business and having to run around because of it, and then of course going to the Reno show, followed by the Thanksgiving holidays, net total of driving a few thousand miles back and forth, and now this trip to Japan just arrived yesterday (hence will be missing the Great Phoenix Get Together). I got this ungodly jetlag and woke up at 2:30am so found the time at last for some posting on my favorite boards.

The Reno show was just great a few weeks ago with lots of shooting the bull with the usual fellow Japanese collectors / forum members, great fun all in all. Have also been picking up some cool pieces lately, but the most recent score is this 29th series I got at the Costa Mesa show last Sunday on my drive back from my Thanksgiving family trip to San Diego.

The wood is a bit on the "has that stained look" side, but all parts matching with a nice full mum. Pretty rare series and glad I was able to pick it up, with A-dog's kind advice to "get it at all costs !"

Hope the pics post ok.

Looks like it has one of those modified type 99 safety knobs from Gunparts Corp. instead of the protruding +i+ nipple that distinguishes most of the original type 38 rifles.

Gunparts has been modifying the type 99 safety and firing pins for use in the type 38 rifles for several years now...

The notched safety knob is actually an unique characteristic of the final Chigusa T-38 production, alongwith the semi-circular rear sight peep. These design characteristics were inherited onto the Type 99 production, although I beleive the 29th series were probably being built alongwith the earlier Type 99 production.

Cousinkix, has anyone ever asked you why you pepper your posts with periodic bolds? I can't help but associate you now with William Shatner as I read what you write. :)

if you are serious about collecting Arisakas, then I strongly recommend you read at least one book called Military Rifles of Japan cowritten by one of our esteemed board members here. There were three types of safeties on T-38s, by your terminology let's call them the big protruding nipple, the little protruding nipple, and the inverted nipple, from early to late. As this is a late T-38 (series 29), this is not only the correct type of safety, but is serial numbered to the rifle. It is not from Numrich/Gunparts.

No I'm not Captain Kirk. I know somebody who has a later type 38 rifle with the type 99 style rear peep sight. I have seen three different variants of front sights on the type 38 Arisakas too...

Edokko, you were supposed to go back to the show to get that rifle for me! :(
Now I'm thinking that if I hadn't given you that advice it would be here in Phoenix waiting for me! :p
Nice catch!
First dibs when you let it go.
