Im glad you posted this, I recently saw one on gunbroker, and it was mismatched, this gives me hope that I can continue to keep an eye out for a matching one. Yours is very nice.

How do you know that sling is correct? Is it Syrian issue?

Very nice...Mine is S3067...

That sling is not original. It's an Israeli sling....The "correct" sling would be a standard Yugo M-48 sling...

The "Y'ish looking mark on your sling is a Israeli IDF property mark...It's called a "TZADIE" or "ZAHAL"...

The numbers also ID it as Israeli.

Same as on these Israeli Mausers..

Also on this Israeli Mauser front sight tool.

Thanks for the information Jimmy C., I've corrected my post title accordingly. I made the assumption that the sling was Syrian based solely on the fact that the character on the buckle and stamped into the leather were not standard English characters. I knew I'd seen it before but didn't make the Israeli connection - Thanks again for correcting me.

I had a lesser grade matching example many years ago but it was a poor shooter so eventually sold it.

I've been sort of working on a "Yugo" collection, and this one fit the bill nicely so I grabbed it. Turns out it's an excellent shooter as well.

Jimmy C. set me straight, see his response with photos above. It's Israeli.

They're out there if you look long enough, I found this one on "Manowars' Hungarian Weapons" site - http://www.hungariae.com/

Good luck in your search!

You know its getting bad when you forget what rifles you have. I have the Syrian Mauser number S2813 that is already on geladen's list. I am posting pictures below so that we can see if the Israeli character Y is stamped on it. (I cant tell, but it looks very similar to the stamps on gunhorde's rifle:

look at the photo of the buttstock sling area stamps:

Do you guys think this was an Israeli capture? any proofs or stamps that demonstrate this?

I would expect that all of the M48BO Syrian rifles imported to the US were Israeli captures.

You've been picking up some nice ones lately, 'horde:cheers:
Thanks, and those are just the ones I've posted! There's more, I've been running in "overdrive" for a while now. While my collection will never be the same as it was back in 2009, I've been picking up some really nice pieces which in a lot of cases surpass what I used to own. Others are just no longer attainable. The problem is, everything is 2x-4x or more $$$ what it was 8 or 10 years ago. So rebuilding my collection has gotten MUCH more expensive.

And now I need a warehouse, since I've branched out into accessories and "accoutrements". I used to tell myself "I'm not a bayonet collector" - Now almost every Mauser I own has a correct bayonet for it.

Speaking of which, can anyone tell me if a standard M48 bayonet be correct for this rifle? Were bayonets issued with these at all? Are there Syrian marked bayonets or just the standard Yugo bayonet?

And the search goes on.... Avante' ! ;)

This last one has a Y that makes me think its Israeli
View attachment 1965609
You are mistaking an actual "Y" in a box proof mark on the Yugo M-48 with the Israeli TZADEI or ZAHAL mark.... Completely different animals.

The Zahal or Azadei mark is distinctive, as it has flat horizontal line which is on the left bottom of the tail of the "Y" as well as two smaller horizontal lines off the top portions of the "Y" ...

The Yugo proof lacks these lines, and is simply a "Y" in a box proof.

See below larger "TZADEI or ZAHAL" markings one on an Israeli rifle cleaning kit, and the other on a cur section of an Israeli Galil rifle receiver.

The Syrian rifles are M48BO (bez oznake) meaning "without markings". That is, without manufacturer's or Yugo national markings. Some M48BO rifles had Syrian or Iraqi crests or Jeems.

The bayonets for them were also BO. Sometimes the bayonet markings were insufficiently scrubbed and you can see traces of the markings. The rifles were not scrubbed, they were not marked originally.

Some of the Iraqi M-48's also had the full Royal Iraqi Hashemite crest .

The one in my collection has a serial number "V44934" which is in the same serial number range as the Syrian crested rifles. I also have a "V" serial numbered M-48 BO which has the Iraqi Jeem marks.. It's SN is V 51821.

I also have another M-48 with the Iraqi "Jeem" mark which was a "W" serial number prefix.

I don't think I have seen a Syrian with a SN higher than 50,000, which is borne out by the serial number survey.

It's interesting that the Yugo's would put a Iraq rifle in the middle of a Syrian run of serial numbers....

Strange, it looks like your Iraqi crest rifle has the blue scrubbed from the crest. Maybe the Iraqis (or the Israelis) thought it looked better that way.

To me it looks like the previous owner, who was a voracious Nevada collector, used some sort of solvent, which removed the bluing... Possible to remove some rust or corrosion...

Geladen - you can add the following to your serial number list:

S2865 as a Syrian M48, matching. Source - gunbroker - Jan 2017
S2722 Syrian M48 with no matching bolt of S1862 - source - gunbroker Dec 7, 2016
S1678 syrian m48 - gunbroker
V28116 - gunbroker March 2017

I have an Iraqi Jeem rifle at my other house, will dig it out in a couple of months to add to your list.

An additional question I have is whether you guys think the Israeli capture connection enhances the values of these rifles?
I would think that a subset of collectors (maybe Jews or Israeli-Americans) would place a premium on them, but on the flip side, the Israeli'shaev surplused so much to the US, that maybe they aren't rare enough?
