ZF stamped bottom right side of butt :-( ???
ZF = Beyond Local Repair ... meaning it needed at some point to be sent back to the depot for refurbishment of some parts. I have a Savage from 1944 Mk1* that has the same stamp on the right side of the butt stock - these rifles were in action no doubt.

Thanks! I just found what ZF stood for a while ago and haven't seen anything worng, was thinking maybe the bolt was scewed or something, was looking for headspace guages too. If the ZF stamp is there does that mean the repair had been done, or that it needed to be done but may not yet have been? in any event I'll be giving it a good go over of course before shooting.

No, the repair would have been done during its service life - they just left the stamp on the butt stock probably as it was then sold out of service. There is nothing wrong my Savage at all and the rifle has a beautiful bore having been used as a Fullbore 1000 yard target rifle before I bought it from the owner who had it from the 60's. I wouldn't worry at all but check the usual things like head space ofcourse. The left side of my butt stock has R over REME which means Repair by the Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers so the ZF got done by a REME workshop more than likely. As for what might have been wrong it may have been very simple or simply a matter of the local field boys not having the parts on hand so it needed to be sent back to depot.

Funny you should ask ... I have all the furniture in bits just after a coat of BLO. There is bedding material there but a bit tough to explain without piccies just now.
