My Yugo M59/66 from AIM is supposed to be here on Monday. I'd like to order some ammunition for it but I'm not sure where to find mil-surp ammo for it or what kind to look for/avoid. I know every caliber of military-surplus ammunition has their good varieties and their bad, I just have no experience with the 7.62x39 round. :)

There has not been very much in the way of military surplus for 7.62x39 available for quite a while now.

Check with some of our sponsors, such as AIM or others, they usually have some ammo in this caliber. I have heard mostly good reports on the Golden Tiger. Wolf usually runs fine in these rifles too, and is often the least expensive.

Since the Yugo rifles do not have chrome bores, except certain later model AKs, if you do run surplus you will need to be very thorough in your cleaning process, because most, if not all, the surplus has corrosive primers. The more recent commercial offerings are non-corrosive.

None of my other mil-surps have chrome lined bores and they do ok with corrosive stuff; I clean them well :). Since it doesn't seem there's much available I guess I'll stick with commercial ammunition then. I've found a few places with spam cans of Wolf ammo but I'm pretty sure it's the older lower-quality stuff from many years past.

Which is best of these?

Brown Bear is good ammo, it's made by Barnaul, and they are generally considered the best of the Russian ammo makers.

I am thinking about getting some Brown Bear. Classic Arms has a deal for 360 rounds at around $67 in a GI 3o Cal. ammo can. I don't shoot that much, could use another can for storage, and may order from them for starters. Centerfire has Wolf for around $19.95 or something per 100 rounds. The stuff isn't as cheap as some of the old surplus, even 8mm and Mosin, WAS. But 7.62x39 should be around for a while. I just got a Yugo 59/66 at a show last weekend and they're neat guns. A bit heavier because of the GL and sight, but should be a bit more accurate due to weight. Mine was made in 1972 and has the ported GL. Looks almost like a type of compensator on the end.

I like the 59/66's that I've shot, and seen shooting. Almost all of the ones I've seen, and shot are fairly accurate rifles, for what they are. The GL attached to the end of the barrel has been said to act as an harmonic balancer for the barrel, which if true could possibly make it somewhat more accurate, in addition to the weight of the total rifle.
