I took in some ammo on trade from a friend and I do not know about a few of the box's. One was a full box of 38 special Super Vel 110gr JHP the other is a full box of Winchester Super -X subsonic 40 S&W. Does anybody have any insight into these box's of ammo? Do they have any value over just range ammo?

The Super-Vel is from the 1960s I believe, and has a little collectibility if in perfect condition, but not really that much.

Ditto super vel was the hot stuff in its day. Everybody was CCW super vel in there handguns.

When my older brother passed about 9 years later his wife called me and gave me all his guns/ammo. In it was some super vell and some of the speer snake shot in 357/38 and 44mag. I haven't seen that stuff in many years.

I'm the original owner of a couple of boxes of 9mm Super Vel ammo. A few years ago, I figgered the stuff just had to be collectable, so I took it to a gunshow to sell and collect my fortune. Ammo collectors at the time said it had no value much above the current price of retail ammo & would gladly pay me that for my 2 boxes. They seemed a little too eager, so I kept both boxes & just put them back into an ammo can in the closet.

Since then, there seems to be a little more interest in Super Vel, so I'm just gonna sit on my 2 boxes until someday it will either be worth selling, or just shooting up in order to reclaim the brass for reloading.

That Super-Vel ammo is som very fine ammunition! Those cartridge collectors weren't wrong in their advice about current/future value. We probably won't live long enough to see our fortunes made by sitting on a few boxs or a few cases of the stuff. Lee Jurras was a pioneer in the specialty ammunition field and had worked for years to perfect his offerings. When he started up his business it didn't take long for the word to spread and before long EVERYONE wanted his ammo. It was that good. Police and Federal agencies were big customers and the rest of us had to search far and wide for a few cherished boxs. Very powerful and accurate and better than the big boys were selling by far. They got mad for taking those big accounts away. So they colluded to squeeze him out of business by cutting off the supply of components, i.e: cartridge cases. It worked and Super-Vel was no more.
I shoot every bit that I can scrounge up with a smile because it feels like flipping the bird to the big ammo companies for doing Lee the way they did.
I've got zero input on the .40 stuff.

This takes me back. I was an officer in the Navy back in the late70s early 80s. I was involved in stuff, and carried a Smith model 59. Had to Qual Expert with the 1911s and Expert with our personal pistol to carry them. We got Super vel 9mm for carry use. I still have maybe half a box of it left over sitting somewhere. My personal experience with it was that it was very reliable, accurate enough, and VERY effective. As in practically explosive on soft tissue. I hit a guy in the neck above the collar bone, and it looked like his head would come off. I still have nightmares about that once in a while. But, as noted above, there is no real premium for it. I would pay a little more for some, but there are a lot of good products out now and Super vel is being made again too. I still have the Model 59 .....

Boy, does this bring back memories. I had a S&W Highway Patrolman with a 6" barrel in the 60's. One day i tried hitting a target at 100 yds with some Super Vel .357. I did!

BTW I traded the Highway Patrolman for a S&W Combat Magnum with a 4" barrel. The Highway Patrolman did not have recessed chambers and kept hanging up on fired cartridges. The Combat Magnum, although having a smaller frame, never gave me any problems and I still have it.
