The only thing on my Peruvian Mauser that looked messed up was the front floorplate screw - nice blue & s/n, but mangled slot. I found out why........ I am taking it apart, other screws came off fine, barrel bands took some work - were very tight, but I am getting nowhere with that one screw........... it is soaking now, but does anyone have any hints for removal ?? HELP !!!!!

I probably won't have the best tip and you've perhaps tried it anyway..... I keep one of these hand impact drivers around close. Often I'll put a screwdriver tip in it and strike the impact tool a few sharp raps. Both to tighten and loosen as that sometimes breakes things loose. But then, .. you already said the screw slot was bad.

Get a manual impact driver (the kind you hit with a hammer--about $25 at Sears). You may have to grind down the bit to fit the screw slot. I used one to make short work of stuck action screw on a Gew 88 that had resisted all other methods I attempted.

Good luck,

Impact driver $6 at Harbor Freight. Hollow ground bit that fits the slot. Also try tightening the other screw in and then attempt to remove the stuck one. This takes some pressure off of it.

Does it have locking screws? I had one on a 24/47 that wouldn't turn and I ended up removing the locking screw to get out.

Doc AV method:
1. Soak for several days in Kroil or similar releasing agent.
2. Try normal screw driver using drill press to exert pressure ( Chapman or Webster driver with ratchet wrench)
3. Try Impact driver
4. Try heat applied to Screw head, cold pads to rest of Rifle. ( expansion and contraction can break rust.).
5. Retry Impact drivers.

6. If by this time, screw won't budge, or is Mangled beyond saving, Centre screw in drill press or Mill/Drill table, Mill out head with a 5/16 end mill ( head will come off) and drill out screw with 7/32th drill: Then Pick out the remaining screw from the threads (Mauser screws are 1/4x22TPI.) using a masonry nail sharpened to a "point" to chisel out the remaining screw threads.
7.Clean up threads with a 1/4x22 Tap from Brownells; replace "Boogered" screw with Brownells screw or original (mismatching) Mauser screw.

Good luck...

This screw is serialized to the gun, so I want to save it - rules out drilling. Trying impact today if overnight oil soak didn't help.

Try putting about 1/3 acetone in the penetrating oil. Thins it and lets it get in a lot better. Then use the impact driver.

Try some PB Blaster on it. Let it soak in. Tap occasionally with brass punch. I have also found that a screwdriver that fits exactly also works. If all fails use the impact wrench.

Do what mauserdad said. The only different thing that I would suggest is using Kroil oil. I have a 71/84 that had a screw that would not come loose. This screw could not even get scratched so I spent 4 days off and on putting Kroil on it then just sitting there for a while tapping the top of the screw with a screwdriver with no handle. Kinda like a screwdriver punch. Anyways tapping it sets up vibrations in the metal so the kroil can seep into areas it normally would not go. On the 4th day she came loose and not a mark on the screw. I would be concerened with the impact tool snapping the head off the screw then there goes your serialized screw then you would have to drill the rest of it out. Just dont get in a hurry, it will come out.
