No question in my mind that it is French walnut or called European walnut . Beautiful fiddleback in the butt stock . They even plugged a knot . Looks like you have polyurethane on the handguard . Is the stock the same . That is hard to get off . " sheepdawg " can tell you the best method to remove it if you want the wood to look original .

Swede, its not poly. I wiped it down with boiled linseed oil to bring out the grain... Little too much lol

Good . You can wipe down BLO before it dries .

Wiped down and rags outside.
Smart man, today's BLO gives off heat as it dries. The fire hazard is printed on the can.

Nice chunk of walnut.

Thanks everyone. It was almost black when I got it. The wood was pretty dry and the metal had very light rust. Rubbing it down with BLO cleaned it up decently.
