I finally came across an un messed with all matching Steyr G88 yesterday. Those of you who collect these rifles know first hand how hard it is to find one all matching with original finish on the stock. Anyhow I was told this rifle came from an old collection that surface recently. It’s fairly unusual to find unit marks on the receiver. Even with a second set of unit marks they usually place them on the barrel bands. Sometimes even on the middle band.

Looks like a really nice find, congratulations, the abscence of a second regimental on the lower band is unique I believe. Usually the third regimental was placed on the left side rail. Here is one on a side rail of an 1890 Danzig:

I do know of one example that has a second regimental on the right side of the GEW. 88 stamp.

Orcutt, you have a beautiful example, one of the nicest I have seen in a long time. I agree with George on the standard order for marking placement but it is not unusual to see this. Congratulations. :)
