Went looking for a .22LR pistol after having perused enough web sites to know what was out there right now. I had it down to 4 different models, and as luck would have it all 4 were in a row in my local Dealer's pistol case. Right off the bat I eliminated 2 of them, so now its down to the ones in the heading. It WILL be one or the other.

I'm a fan of both Ruger and S&W, and already have a dozen or so of each brand, so that makes the choice harder. It will basically be a plinker, but it'll also be used for field carry. Not looking for target accuracy, but don't want a shotgun either.

One other mix to add to the equation - it'll be my wife's first handgun. I will shoot it too, so it should fit me as well. It might see limited purse carry, but that's not the first purpose.

Sooo, what say ye all? Pros and cons of either would be appreciated.

I like both pistols with the edge going to the M&P22. Your wife however might prefer the SR-22 due to it's smaller size. So I'd recommend letting her handle both and see what she prefers. Either one will be an excellent choice.
Pros. Both are reliable and accurate enough for plinking and field use. For a new shooter the SR-22 has a decocker safety which is a very good feature. The M&P22 has a thumb safety also but the inclosed hammer remains cocked. My wife likes the SR-22 better because of the smaller size, I prefer the M&P22 because it is larger and fits my hand better.
Cons. I like both and can't think of any. You could do like I did and buy both.

I have shot the ruger. Its actually pretty accurate (while I had all kinds of random holes with the similar walther) -- made say 3 inches @ 15-20 yards.

Issue: My hands are not huge, just average-to just above average -- and I pulled the trigger with the INSIDE of the FIRST knuckle on me trigger finger. Its made for an 8 year old kid to shoot it, or something with extremely small hands. If not for that I would actually accept it as very nice addition, but its worthless to me due to the grip to trigger distance.

I have no comment on the M&P.

Best .22 of this "type" in my experience is the cz kadet. I know, I know, you already did the research, but at least look once if you have not :)
