Hello.

I got my hands on a Springfield 1873. Im just wondering what history the rifle may had. How much info can you get from the serial number? It's 305298. Do anyone have same rifle with close serialnumber?

Thank you in forehand.

you can ask someone for a SRS check on that serial number,
fi it gets a hit, it will show were that rifle was at one time in it's history

the serial number will also show the manufacture date, (1885 for your rifle)

does it have the Buffington rear sight,
any unit marking on the metal or stock?

Springfield Research Service,

they have archive records that may or may not show your rifle in a unit, base, ship or depot at a day in time,

the U is actually US, as in United States

yours has a Buffington rear sight, adopted in 1884

So here are some pics of the rifle. Dont know about the rear sight? What would you say? As you can see in the last picture it has a "U" marking. Anyone know what that means?
The “U” marking is part of the letters “US”. The “S” appears to be worn down but if you look carefully with a magnifying glass you will probably see the outline. Also, on the front barrel band you might also see the letter “U”, this letter means “UP” to indicate the proper placement of the barrel band.
