There is a springfield 87a that looks like a m1 trainer on gunbroker. It has a DOD stamp. Was this rifle ever used as a trainer. Thanks Joe.

The quick answer is no, BUT. Is the mark actually DOD, or US PROPERTY, or similar? I read, on these forums, I think, about a Win. 1890 US Property marked that was purchased off the rack for pest control on a base in WWII. Anything is possible.

There is a Springfield Model 87M (for Musket) that has been hyped as a "Garand Trainer Prototype" but the general concensus is that NONE were ever purchased by the U.S. Government to be used as trainers, period.

As the saying goes: Buy the gun, not the story.

That being said, they are nifty little rifles and when I get some time I will post about mouting a modern scope on them. Its the same rifle as the Savage Model 6 and Sears sold them as well under the trade name "Ranger"
