How much rust is too much rust on a Spanish Mauser to keep it as a shooter?I recieved a 1927 Rifle that has pitting under the woodline. The barrel dosent bother me that much as it is all tward the muzzle end. What worries me is pitting on the reciever.

Pics are below,safe to shoot or a good start as a reading lamp in my gunroom?

I dont think she will live,cleaned the bore(which is not really that bad)but,chamber is rough

Unfortunately, my suggestion is to swing by your local WalMart and pick out a nice shade for your Spanish Mauser "reading lamp".

I doubt anyone will suggest you go out and shoot this one. No sense in taking a chance hurting yourself.

The external pitting on the receiver and barrel are not enough to worry me from shooting one like it. I've got an 1894 Brazilian that's worse, and I intend to shoot it. Your rough chamber worries me more than the pitting on the outside of the receiver, but probably isn't "dangerous", however you would likely find it somewhat difficult to extract a fired case. I would be more concerned with excess headspace. Does it pass a FIELD gage? I'll bet that it does not. I still wouldn't turn it into a lamp. I'd part it out and sell the pieces. If you do, let me know, I might be interested in the stock...

ive shot much worse it should be fine just make shure your headspace is good.

Not good, but probably not dangerous. Stick to commercial ammo or light handloads. Some people think all Spanish Mausers should be made into lamps.

it is stupid to make any military rifle into a lamp and the Spanish mausers are great safe and totaly reliable. my m16 spanish mauser is just as acurate as any gun and never gave me any problems or misfires id take a spanish mauser to war.

Whoa....dont send out the gestapo,I'm not making a lamp out of it...It was a phececious statement used in lou of saying "could you shoot it or relegate it to wall hanging status".

I have gotten it cleaned up and inspected. I am not going to shoot it as it has too many checks in the negetive colum. External rust i am no worried about,but chamber is pitted,and what looks to have been gualed by something.Pitting is not just located in just an area but 360 degrees around total chamber. Just ahead of chamber(where rifling starts) there is a deep rust groove that runs the total circumfrence of the bore. It is rough enough to have trouble starting a patch down the bore. I would wory about a pressure spike from it.

Hey it is what it is.It has a nice crack free stock and handguard,and is complete except a cleaning rod. It has been cleaned,barrel freshly cosmolined,and is sitting with my mauser collection.Other than being retired from shooting,it is a decent example of south american mauser. If one day i run across a bubbed up 93, it might be used to bring it back to its former glory.

Be assured no Mausers will be harmed from the writings of this posting(and my wife would not go for a mauser lamp by the sofa anyways .

If you really want to shoot it, you could always do the good ole pull string from behind cover test

Although that does not mean that the next shot wont cause a facelift.

shoot it a rifle not a carbine if you ever want to get rid of it let me know, i aint got a rifle theyre hard to get.
