Spanish Destroyer carbines: what is the story?

Seems like for ever, these Destroyer carbines are sought after, high priced and much in demand.

Is there a reason for this collector interest? Most Spanish bolt rifles are not exactly well made
compared to 98K and VZ24 and other Euro bolt weapons. However the Destroyers seem to have
something that attracts buyers.

What is the story?

They're fun.

People realized that the statement in the quotes is false.
IJ70 : just cause you disagree does not make what I said false. That your opinion differs is okay.

But the question was actually regarding the Destroyer carbines and the question remains: what is the attraction for this specific carbine?

So back to Destroyer carbines IJ 70 and do you have something relevant to add ?
Rarity, accuracy, nice handling characteristics. Nothing wrong with the quality of manufacture. Not sure where you got this info from. Remember back when most people thought that Mosins and Arisakas were junk guns that would blow up in your face. That info turned out to be false.

Indeed I do. I am proud owner of a Destroyer Carbine, I also own: ASTRA 400, STAR Modelo A, STAR Modelo B Super
I was the proud owner of a Star PD and a LLama 1911 clone: both shot themselves to pieces. Nice designs but metal hardness / quality was lacking for
sustained firing.

However, bias aside to Spanish steel, Just what makes the Destroyer rare? Is it not just a police carbine and kind of common?
Prices for Destroyer carbines have gone up for the same reason as any other milsurp type weapon- there are no more to import, and they normally appear sporadically from collections. I saw 2 at the Indy show Saturday, one run-of-the-mill at $300, and the other with a beautiful tiger-striped stock at $350, but it had a replacement mauser buttplate.

Mine is fun to shoot, and since it's a bolt gun in a pistol chambering, I don't imagine I will be shooting it to pieces.

Here is a full page on the Destroyer, if you want to learn more...

I think it's the same reason that many other milsurps become insanely popular. They don't have to be spectacularly rare, or visually stunning, or even have a sinister/cool history behind them. All that has to happen is that enough people want them and enough people don't have them.

Many rifles chambered in pistol calibers become very popular because they have low recoil, fairly good accuracy, and they don't make a massive blast when fired (I personally like the Mosin level muzzle blast, but there are some people out there that are concerned about their own hearing). Not to mention they can be very utilitarian when hunting things like hogs where the killing can get up close and personal, and they make excellent truck guns in their standard format (so Bubba really doesn't need to do much work). Basically there's not a lot NOT to like when it comes to Destroyers (the only thing I can think of is short range relative to full and mid powered rifles, but that's not really a detriment because the average milsurp owner won't absolutely 150% need to shoot anything over 300 meters away)

Ok, the PD is know for cracking frame, I can not fault your reasoning there.

However, what Llama got to do with it? As far as I know Llama is commercial product. You meantioned things like K98k, Vz24, Destroyer Carbine, none of these are commercial products. Why are you trying to mix apples and oranges? Do you have an agenda in mind?
Whilst I agree with Milprileb on the quality of Spanish firearms (never seen one I wanted to take home, let alone shoot. Some M43's looks OK wood wise, but metal finish... rather have a Yugo), the reason the Destoyer is popular/sought after is it is fun to shoot (no recoil almost), light and handy, surprisingly accurate, and not that common - plus there are a few variants to collect.

I see Destroyers here quite often, and the prices here are reasonable - finding the ammo here is nigh on impossible unless you luck into one of the 9mm Para ones.

The most recent one I saw was terrible fit and finish, with the action and barrel seemingly "floating" in the stock due to pathetic inletting/bedding, and bands that looked like they were cut from an old Coke can.

Hey, they are fun to shoot, albeit a springly trigger pull. When I find ammo, I buy it, like HP for $15/box, got them all, 3 boxes/50 rounds at a gun show.
Why? My grandaughters will love them on javelina hunts.
Buy one and fine out why!

Destroyer 9mm Largo ammo

I just purchase my 4th Destroyer carbine this weekend, a very good 1961, from a local gun shop for $195!
I must agree with

However I don't find that finding the ammo here is nigh on impossible. You can look at past 9mm Largo discussions on here about that.

I recently purchased 1000 rounds fro CAI for $150- the only center fire that I know of that costs less is the 7.62x25 (my other favorite.) Yo may not be able to purchase 9mm largo at your local store but places like Sarco inc. and LongMountain outfitters are well stocked with this ammo. It is also found at times at places like Aim, J&G and SOG.
I just wish I had more firearms that used 9mm larg
Mredim, HERE is Australia to me. So, yes, finding 9mm Largo is NOT easy.
