Saw a Soviet SKS at the local gunshop today and am interested. 1954 Izhevsk, all-matching serial numbers, non-refurb. Metal finish is in very good condition, but the wood is scuffed and worn in places. Cleaning rod is missing (is there a good source for replacement rods?). The shop wants $479 for it. This seems high to me, but I don't know the current market. Any input would be welcome.

TIA.

Last month an Izhevsk went for almost $1400 on Gunbroker. They only made Izhevsk SKSs in '53 and '54 and they are a lot harder to come by here in the US. If you have an opportunity to pick a legitimate matching Izhevsk(refurbed or not) up for under $500 you should run, not walk, back to that shop and scoop it up as fast as you can. If you don't keep it you can double your money, Easily.

Rods are the same as Chinese and while not matching will complete your Carbine while looking for a matching rod. The Chinese are fairly cheap to get too.

I thought an Izzy would go for more than 375 anywhere in the USofA. For a decent matching Tula, 400 seems to be the going rate in my neck of the woods...

They Do, If its all matching and a Non refurb Id say its not out of line at all. I have seen them go 700 on Gunbroker and there was a refurb in a shop here that he wanted 500.00. i offered Him a NIB Saiga with 4 Saiga Mags and 50 cash. The guy is such a D that he said he needed 100.00 cash. I told him to pound sand. I found one on craigslist right down the street from me for 350.00 about 3 weeks later.

I am new to this site and I may have posted here incorrectly, if I did, please excuse me,
The matter I am writting for help with is an sks, I have looked at many sites for the past 2 weeks and have come up with a " strange brew " for lack of a better way to put it. The sks I have has the side mount for the strap up front, milled reciever , no bayo , no nite sights ,no grande stuff , and is norinco, fair enough,, but with a pinned barrel and the most strange thing is, when i called CAI , they did a seriel number data base check and told me that this gun was never imported by them , it has the norinco, cai st, vlb v1 , so how did i get it with their name on it, when they dont have it listed seriel number wise ? , it also has a pinned barrel... is this called a " chicom " style ? thanks for any one who can help me answer these strange questions , I am thinking of selling it

Since i'm seeing the norinco closet queens here at the local gun shop going for $500 and selling i figure the orginal russian sks would be worth a tad more. The prices are going up little by little. The prices were around this area before the flood of yugo's hit us. The russians were around $475++ and the norc's weren't too far behind that. Then the flood of yugo's pushed the bottom out on the sks prices. But were slowly climbing once again now. With now new sks in sight to be imported we should be up to $750 or $1,000 by the fall of '12. If the yugo sks's are completely gone.

The norinco sks is a quality sks and very accurate too. It was said here once that the pinned barrels were a tad more accurate over the threaded barrels.

Amen GG. I seem to see that many people think the Izzy rifles were produced in tandem with the Tula. No! Izzy were actually made for less than 24 months and few in numbers. Heck, a perfect clean BBQ refurb is worth $500. If I could get another original or 10 for less than that I would get a loan if I had to and buy all 10.

well damn... now what do i put it on? guess i need to find a non matching gun to bubba up ;)
The OP's Russian is not a Norinco Chinese. No comparison. Actually, any original SKS is going to be worth more in the long run than a modified one. Just look at the Auctions and that will tell you the real story.

ah yeah i missed that, but i just picked up a russian, so maybe... since i have both i might be able to bring myself to do it to the norinco? after all the mag doesn't match! LOL
You own the Carbines, you can do as you wish with them. I am not one who believes in alterations or modifications myself.
