Source for K31 butplate screws

3817 Views 17 Replies 7 Participants Last post by  SpinRC
I took my K31 to the range the other day and when I got home I noticed my troop tag hanging out of the butplate. I checked the rifle and found that the bottom screw had fallen out somewhere along the way. Thank goodness the troop tag did not go with it. I looked allover the truck but I can not find the screw. Does anyone know where to get a replacement screw? I checked Numrich and they did not have the K31 screws but they did have 1911 butplate screws. Will the 1911 screws work? Thanks in advance for the help.

Yes 1911 wood screws do work for the K31 also, break a match into the screw hole before you put the new one in.

Hey, give our sponsor Rich Reich a email. He has all kinds of Swiss K31 parts and he is a helluva lot cheaper than those parts prices on Graffs & Sons.

Rich has gone out of his way to find and get me parts for all kinds of milsurp and especially the K31 Swiss rifle.

Great prices, great service and a boards sponsor: Recommend him highly
No need to offend Grafs on their prices, they are a mirror of what Swiss gun dealers charge for their NEW K31 parts for as long as they last and if you don't believe that I can proof that.

The prices that surplus K31's sold for in the USA are a bargain compared to what they really should cost and the remaining stock of new spare parts was just recently released and is simply a very limited one after all these years, after all the Swiss did not stop shooting the K31's after they became obsolete around 1960, the parts consuming continued and what's left over is on the market now...

I could have used different words because of some sticking caps lock etc. , I just hope the message came through, mud-throwing is so easy to those that stay out of defending their selves....
Nothing bad about Rick Reich but there is something like live and let live and for some it seems a hard lesson to learn.

two cts. etc.

Guisan.
I usually use a bigger piece of wood than a match, but the principle is the same. I pare the plug down a bit to be a little oversize for the hole, then tap it in with some wood glue. Pare it off flush when the glue dries and re-drill for the screw. Good as new.
I do not understand your reply

---These are your words and I have no idea what you are referring to and can only surmise some of your reply got lost.

I stand on what I said: Reich is a sponsor and has great prices. Graffs is more expensive for K31 parts.

That is not meant to be offensive to you but I think you somehow took it that way.

I bought a complete K31 bolt from Reich for $36. Graffs would charge me nearly 5 times that amount for the parts to make a bolt.

We can agree to disagree but for my money: the sponsor did me right.

Thanks for the help everyone! I have a replacement screw on the way. I had no idea Grafs had so many replacement parts for the K31.
Paying for a complete used bolt is quite different than buying new parts to add to or build a bolt. Graf's parts are new and virtually new. I know this because my father was a part of them getting these parts. Supporting a board sponsor is always preferrable, but not at the expense of slamming another dealer.

All you had to say was that "Rick Reich has k31 parts and is a board sponsor. Please consider him first."

Looking at the adjustable headspace bolts for the K31 got me thinking. Did the Swiss design the bolt so that you could adjust the headspace as the rifle was used? E.g. when the rifle came back to the arsenal for inspection they would switch out a 5 headspaced bolt for a 10 to compensate for an increase as the rifle was shot. If that is the case what are some signs to look for that indicate you may need to change bolt cylinders? Seeing the different cylinders just made me wonder, but I doubt this is even a problem.
All you had to say was : Swiss Products has new parts at Graffs and is not a board sponsor.

So when will Swiss Products become a board sponsor?

Most bolts are standard ones without any size marking under the extractor but there are rifles that have the oversized bolts marked 05, 10 or 15, I just don't know if these were first fit during manufacturing, later "repairs" or both.
Putting just some used bolt into any of the Swiss straight-pulls is always risky when you don't know about the proper headspace.

The 1889 and 1911 bolts have the front part of the bolt that comes in different dimensions, the picture shows these and also the armorers tools to change them out.

Sorry to breach board etiquette by using my Son's membership.

We're not of course. My involvement with the Graf's purchase of Swiss parts was only advisory on pricing and saleability. We can't sponsor any board because we're a mfg, not a seller or dealer. If we could sponsor any boards we'd certainly sponsor all three of the major Swiss boards including this one.
My apologies to Mr. Reich. I don't know him but I'm sure he's a solid supporter of the membership and is a fair businessman.
How about we end this foolishness.
Thanks
P
Yes, I agree, lets end the foolishness, as it was started out of nothingness.

Given the present state of the economy - both national and Gunboards - I suspect Vic would be more than happy to accept any support you could offer.

I'm saying this as a very satisfied shooter with your steel diopter. Got a clover leaf at 200 yards with your sight while calibrating range settings. Unfortunately I ran out of time and ammo before completing adjustment. This group was shot with Prvi Partizan FMJ.

Thanks Leon, I'll tell him but I think I can reply to this.
We only found out yesterday the the new Graf's board format has linked SP with the rest of the k31 parts on the same parts page. We do have our own page there but it seems its been linked as well. If I had known that I would never have even posted that link to the parts.
We have agreements with our US distributors not to advertise at all. They do all of their own advertising. We seldom ever direct anyone to our own Brownells or Grafs pages unless asked and we wait to see if anyone else will do it for us first.
We have a forum on the SRDC because my father was Big Lee's founder of the forums there and its pretty much a home to us, but we don't support the forum with money. If we could support and advertise here we would, but we're simply not allowed to by distributor agreement. Its sorta tricky and I really do need to be more careful about links to SP distributors.
Thanks, Leon....... and great shooting!

Welll, as said before...
Live and let live, that is the best way to go.

Our forum is pretty well self-supporting because we specialize in the Swiss stuff onlly and Swiss Products adds a lot by sharing the developing of their new products, that is why they have their own product-info section at the forum of swissrifles.com.

I ordered the Vetterli rear sling swivel screw from Grafs and it fits the butt plate nice and tight. Thanks for the help Guisan and Latigo.
