IN LEAN TIMES, SOCAL RESIDENTS TRADE GUNS FOR FOOD
WFMB Channel 8, San Diego ^ | 12-08-08 at 8:52AM | WFMB Random Author

LOS ANGELES -- A program to exchange guns for gifts brought in a record number of weapons this year as residents hit hard by the economy look under the bed and in closets to find items to trade for groceries.

The annual Gifts for Guns program ended Sunday in Compton, a working class city south of Los Angeles that has long struggled with gun and gang violence. In a program similar to ones in New York and San Francisco, the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department allows residents to anonymously relinquish firearms in return for $100 gift cards for Ralphs supermarkets, Target department stores or Best Buy electronics stores.

Turning in assault rifles yields double that amount.

In years past, Target and Best Buy were the cards of choice, with residents wanting presents for the holidays.

This year, most asked for the supermarket cards, said sheriff's Sgt. Byron Woods.

"People just don't have the money to buy the food these days," he said.

NO questions asked! I love it! A crimimnal can kill somebody with a cheap handgun and these damned liberal police chiefs will destroy the evidence, which links him to a capital crime. IDIOTS.

The Los Angeles county sheriff is notorious for selling the department's surplus weapons to gun stores. JKV Shooting Sports (up north in Salinas) has purchased guns from them before. Call them and ask if you don't believe it.

That same dealer has made wholesale purchases of Jennings, Bryco, Lorcin and Raven handguns. Those stupid liberal police departments will pay 50-100 bucks each for a bucket full of brand new cheap Saturday night specials in the San Francisci Bay Area. This gun dealer actually makes a small profit doing this. You can't buy them from this guy; because he won't sell a piece of junk to his regular customers...

What these idiots do is turn over the worst cheap junk they can find- in many cases it is stolen.
Assault rifles? Ha, I would like to see the final tally of how many these clowns wind up with, can you say ZERO? I'll just bet you can...

I'd like to set up shop right outside wherever they're doing this buy back. Offer $150 for every weapon that struck my fancy. Never know, you might get lucky and find some gangbanger trying to unload a mint '09 Argy cavalry carbine.

They tried this locally a few years back a couple times. There were people buying the guns from the jerks turning them in outside the station, in some cases these people got a great deal. It hasn't been tried since, the results were too embarrassing.

At least the Baked Beans will allow him to blow hot air out the other end......maybe then he won't be on this forum spewing from the mouth.

I bet you could buy some of those weapons for only $50.00 or less in cash. Cash is better than a gift card if you just want to go around the corner and buy crack. On the other hand, I might offer $100 if the seller was willing to present a state issued photo id card for proper record keeping.

Yes, but i bet one could get pretty near the face value in cash for a gift card worth $100 in groceries. The fallacy of food stamps is that we live in a market economy.

I am on the lookout for a good buy-back in my area. I have two handguns that I would love to get $100 out of (for each).

If I find my buy-back, it would raise a serious question...

...do I buy another gun with the proceeds, do I buy ammo with the proceeds, or do I take the plunge on re-loading equipment. Something tells me I would buy another gun.

Cook up a big bowl of STAGG Chili if you wanna give the poor man some gas. Maybe a second serving is gonna be enough for a bad case of diarrhea. They sell this stuff really cheap by the case at the COSTCO wholesale stores. It might be just what a catering service needs for the next anti-gun group's annual BBQ...

It's been done before, actually.
