Stopped by the gunshop on the way back from a funeral.
About half way down the used gun rack, sitting by itself among
some turkish mausers is another Mosin Nagant.

Ok, maybe another 91/30...
Wait a minute, it has a finnish front sight.
GENTLY pick it up.

Lots of crossed out numbers and re marking.
Shank is marked with SY and has a D above it.
Only thing I dont like is someone removed the screw in
metal around the sling holes. (cant remember the word)
(anyone know what these will cost to replace?)

yeah, its marked on hold for me.
The shop is good about setting stuff back until
I can make it in WITHOUT the wife.

There should be a serial number on the left side of the barrel shank. Since you did not mention a Tikka "T" in a triangle, it is probably a SIG barrel and I would expect to see a serial number below 20,000.

If the stock is missing the oval shaped sling escutcheons, the ones that are used with a leather strap, then I think that would lower the value quite a bit... at least it does for me. Those screws are hard to find and impossible to replace without it being very obvious that they were messed with, so to me I wouldn't own it since I would always be giving it a dirty look :D . Otherwise, if it has the escutcheons that only have a small hole in them, that would point to a post-war replacement stock or a reworked stock, both which are less desirable to a collector but still would not affect the value too much.

So the price is the key.
A really nice M28 can go $300-$400, a Ski Trooper even higher.
If it is missing parts and has a questionable stock or other flaws, see what he'll take -maybe $100 to $200 depending what he has in it.
How's the bore?
The only reason somebody would remove the escutcheons is to sand and refinish the stock, so look closely - that would knock it down considerably.

With tax, I should be into it for about 175.00 out the door.
Since it is the first M28 I have ever seen outside a
gunshow, I can live with the price, even if bubba
might have screwed it up a bit.

Did you find this in a Kansas gunshop? I must have missed one!

Nice find, these are really hard to find in these parts.
