Hello everyone,

Im a new member but not new to Collecting surplus rifles. In about two weeks i'll be 18 and want to buy "my" first surplus rifle,(all the others are my dads as im not old enough) actually, i want to build a 91/30 sniper rifle. I searched a couple of pages here and couldnt find answers to my questions so, bear with me please.

Where is the best place online to buy the Best (least expensive) PU scope/mount?

Can i turn down the handle on the rifle myself? pretty sure i can. Got a tutuorial?

I know where to get an ex sniper so thats no problem.

Thanks in advance. Seems like a great forum, im hoping to learn alot!

Ethan.

EDIT// Im sorry i found the sniper forum a couple below this one... forgive my ignorance.

Depending on your knowledge, skills, and abilities, you may want to consider all options. Authentic Soviet refurbed snipers may still be available from R-Guns for about $900. Replica snipers ready to go may run from $350. to $400. Your "DIY" project may run $400. to $600. Determine what you want and what you have to spend. Best wishes! DDR

I've seen 'replica' snipers for 300-350 bucks. If you consider that you're going to drop at least 100 bucks on the rifle (by the time you get it shipped to an FFL dealer), add in the price of your scope and mount, usually you're looking at 400+, and lets not forget the time and expenses of drilling and tapping the receiver for the mount.

As for the bolt, the main issue with doing it yourself is that the factory bolt is short. You could heat it and bend it down, but giving it enough curve for the large ball end to clear the scope is going to be a problem. Also, you won't have much bolt left to grab, and your leverage will be severely decreased by the bend (as the knob will be closer to the centerline of the bolt). Add into that the fact that it will look totally wrong.

You could certainly cut the bolt and weld on a new, longer handle, if you have access to the equipment to do so. Of course, there you are looking at the expense of the new handle...

What I'm getting at here is that although you can certainly do the work yourself, buying a repro is probably going to be less expensive in the long run...

If you just want a Mosin with a scope, a scout-style mount is a good option, they can be had very cheaply and there are good choices out there for scopes. You will have to make a compromise when it comes to magnification or field of view. I put a scout scope on my 91/30. From my current viewpoint, I'm thinking the same setup on a m38, or even an m44 with the bayonet removed, would be better. The scout scope lends itself very well to quickly raising the rifle to shoulder and getting a quick shot, and a shorter version of the Mosin would be better for this than the 91/30. This isn't to say that the scout scope didn't work well on my 91/30...

If you go this route, I recommend the longer ATI mount. I used the shorter one, and I could have mounted my scope a little further back if I had the longer mount.

Well, this is what ive been lookin at....

I.O. scope - 300

Ex Sniper 150-175

Bolt (sending off to bolt man?) 45?

what tools do i need for the drilling/mounting? my dad is gifted when it comes to mechanics// workmanship of any kind,.

so in total around 515-530.. seems worth it to me... im not planning on selling it in the future. and i like the sentimental value of building one...

Does this sound like a good setup?

That price sounds about right, maybe a little more for the tools. No idea on the pricing of those, though, or exactly what you'll need as I haven't done any conversion research for my ex-sniper yet.

Best of luck to you.
