I have a beautiful all matching 1895 Chilean mauser with tiger stripped stock. The only problem is that the barrel is shot out-very, very little rifling left- when you slug the barrel-the slug is smooth. At 50 and 100yrds-bullets are sideways. My question is what are my options with this??? Could relining the barrel work??? I cant find a 7x57 military barrel to swap out. What about cutting new rifling and enlarging the caliber??? What are some options??? I would like to keep it in original form, if all else failers I guess I could make a sporter out of it-I dont like this option-please throw me a bone here.

I have seen mismatched M1895 Chileans with excellent bores in the $200-250 asking range. If you want to keep the rifle original, I would search for a mismatched rilfe with an excellent bore to buy then have your barrel replaced. You could then sell the remaining parts to recoup some of your expenses. Remember that the '95 action is not that strong compared to a '98 action.

It could be re-barreled with the original profile and the original sights installed. Ask some gunsmiths local to you. Since it is a small ring Mauser, going to a larger caliber would probably not be recommended. On second thought, there are some 35 Rem barrels for small ring Mausers, so maybe yours could be rebored to that.

You could find a collector who wants a "beautiful all matching 1895 Chilean mauser with tiger striped stock", sell it to him, and buy another one with a sharp bore. That would probably be the cheapest, fastest solution, and avoid bubbafying an all matched rifle.

I though about reboring but you would have to go up to .308 and I dont think the action is strong enough. I might just list it on Gunbroker and be clear about the barrel then find another one. I really dont want to mess with another sporter. I currently have a Swedish mauser sporter, previously done, its a good job, but my all original 96SM still shoots better.

Contact Lother Walter in Germany, they make replacement military configuration barrels even in 29 inch last person I heard ordered a new barrel from them only cost $250 not bad. I know if a all matching Chilian Mauser in 7x57 at a shop here in Oregon if you are interested, the Baron's Den, and no I have no affiliation with them.

No expert on this process, but it seems to me that if you reload, you could cut new rifling into it and shoot lead in the original caliber, should expand enough to bite & stabilize? Or bore it to 308 or 311 and use an appropriate pressure handload?

I would not mess with the original barrel, however. I would get a new barrel or a spare one and go from there, so you can always put it back to original to sell or whatever.

+1. If you want a shooter, buy one, don't degrade the originality of yours. Barrels can be relined, old Winchesters often are, but its not usually done even with moderate pressure ammo like the 7mm.

Thanks for all the input. At this point Iam certain of keeping it in its original config. Iam looking into relineing the barrel and see if it could shoot cast bullets possibly. I did take a look at the barrel from a 93 mauser on GB, only problem is its too short, I think it was 21", but not bad for $20. Iam keeping my eye on Numrich from time to time they get in barrels in original config. If anyone runs across a used 7mm 29" barrel-please let me know

Many smiths wont reline a higher pressure round. They stay down in the pistol calibers, and straight wall rifle rounds like 45-70.Its hard to find one who will rerifle military barrels too.Check with Redmans relining, and reboring for more info.
