I was looking thru the regular refurbed 91/30's that were selling for 99.99 at Cabela's. Found an SCW for the same price, it was sitting next to another SCW 91/30 that had a $275 price tag (had a recent stock repair and a Chinese SKS sling). Go figure... I guess they priced it lower as it was not marked with "Made In USSR. I took it home.
This had to be one of the grimiest Mosins I have had pleasure to clean. Cosmoline, dirt, rust, some stuff that had turned to varnish on metal parts (cosmoline or maybe some real old WD40). Took me 4 hour today. The wood was only wiped off, all the work went into cleaning up the metal.
It is a 1937 Tula, not a single matching part, lots of Izhevsk parts, the bolt head is Remington.
A couple of "before" pictures:

After.

Funky Spanish cleaning rod:

What looks like a gear stamp in the wood. Any ideas?

I don't know if that cleaning rod is SCW or not, as I don't have a SCW in my closet yet, but I have never seen one like that before. I have seen similar bent wire hangers on VC Mosins as well as SCW.

Either way, it was a good buy on your part.

That rod looks Spanish made to me. Nice piece of history, I am quite fond of SCW arms. This one certainly fits.

Its a pretty good indicator of an SCW in that is is in the correct range of years, Has wire sling hangers, and the replacement cleaning rod is another known SCW indicator. Those things combined with the date and lack of import marking pretty much seal the deal on this one being SCW.

Vit,

Ya' did well, I love these SCW Mosins. Is the bore decent? Take a look under the butt plate...never know what interesting mark or stamp ya' might find:). Looks like the metal has original blueing, very nice.

Hey Mat,

Ya' know ya' wanna' see it too. Have a few rifles that are worth much more than the "PAGE" rifle, but historically it is one of my favorites. That thread is one of my favorites, very entertaining and informative. vit stole his rifle. vit, is the receiver not Tula? I would think so. From what I have learned here, don't think Franco's men bothered with changing out bad barrels, could be wrong though. Maybe Bob has some input on that, or Interloper.

Mat, keep up the hunt.

Bore is surprisingly nice. The only thing under the butt plate was some dirt and rust.
vit,

Dayum, that's ok, nice find. Great to find any Mosin Nagant with no import markings and original finish. We have the local show next weekend, dealer friends have been showin' up with Mosin's for the last few shows, but none for a hundred bucks. But if something interesting shows up I will be well armed with what I have learned here in the last few months. Thanks for the photos.

Permit me to mention again the book "Arms for Spain." Detailed accounting of arms to the Republican forces. Very cheap book. Often found on ebay for $5. An essential book for any Mosin/SCW student.

Nice find, vit!
Looks like the secret is out on these and now everyone thinks they're worth $250 and up. Despite the promise I made to my wife not to bring any more lost puppies home for awhile, I would have been all over that one.

There was a thread awhile back about wire hangers. I think our resident Mosin Gurus pretty much ruled wire hangers like these to be proof positive of SCW provenance...not that they can't be faked of course. Add in the cleaning rod and the probability is pretty high that this was wielded by premature anti-fascists.

Oh yeah, the buttplate thread. Got a chuckle rereading that one. Especially the derail between the Bolsheviks and the National Socialists.

This all reminds me...I have some cold water to throw on all of your SCW enthusiasm. I'll save it for another day, though. I don't want to turn vit's celebration into a wake.
